Hushedintheshadow, whilethesunishot,

Watchedbytheherdsman, whouponhisstaff

Isleaning, andinleaningtendeththem;

Andastheshepherd, lodgingoutofdoors,

Passesthenightbesidehisquietflock,

Watchingthatnowildbeastmayscatterit,

Suchatthathourwerewe, allthreeofus,

Ilikethegoat, andliketheherdsmenthey,

Begirtonthissideandonthatbyrocks.

Littlecouldtherebeseenofthingswithout;

ButthroughthatlittleIbeheldthestars

Moreluminousandlargerthantheirwont.

Thusruminating, andbeholdingthese,

Sleepseizeduponme,—sleep, thatoftentimes

Beforeadeedisdonehastidingsofit.

Itwasthehour, Ithink, whenfromtheEast

FirstonthemountainCithereabeamed,

Whowiththefireofloveseemsalwaysburning;

Youthfulandbeautifulindreamsmethought
